So since the doily dress, I have been obsessed with doilies and determined to learn to crochet! So I started trying again...
I did pretty good at the single crochet....
It was the half double that I had trouble with...pretty sure it's not supposed to look like this...
Here's my second attempt....not great but a lot better that the first...one of these days, I'll make a doily...for now I guess I just have to wait for the etsy shop the find enough for my dress....

I've been crocheting to my hearts desire for the past few months. I've notived the exact same thing that happened to your first attempt at DC's. To my knowledge, the twisting is normal and it will straighten out as you add rows onto your projects. Just be wary of skipped stitches, it's easy to skip on or two and it will change the entire project (although some are not so badly affected as others, like scarves and dishcloths it's not a big deal but the doilies end up looking quite funky!)

I am trying to learn too! I am having the same problem! You should definitely do a post once you figure out how to make it curl less! Glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem!!!
I had this problem often when I started. The best advice I ever got was to make your chain stitch row with less tension and looser which will in turn give your stitches more room to spread out. That should help some twisting and also prevent some of that puckering that can happen to the bottom row in comparison to the rest of your crochet piece.
