Oliver + S {Christmas} Photo Dress

paper doll model
Oliver + S Photo Dress
"The children's sewing pattern for this lined, above-the-knee-length, A-line dress features a hidden, on-seam, front kangaroo pocket and an invisible back zipper. View A has a stand-away, roll collar and 3/4-length cuffed sleeves. View B of this girl's sewing pattern includes a ruffle collar and gathered, bias-bound, 3/4-length sleeves."

When I first started sewing, I never would have chosen an Oliver + S pattern.  I mean, I thought they were adorable and all, but you know me....I'm all about my ruffles and shirring, so typically I stuck to Izzy & Ivy patterns, Portabello Pixie, Ping Fig...you get the drift, but then, one day the manager at my local sewing center asked me if I would be interested in sharing some of my outfits in the store.  I couldn't believe it!  I hadn't been sewing for that long, and I was so thrilled that she asked me!

So, not wanting to be a one note, I decided to branch out a bit, and try a couple Oliver + S patterns.  One of those was her Jump Rope Dress pattern.  I was sure it was going to be a disaster!  lol All I had ever sewn was a straight line!  But it turned out pretty good (you can see it here) and I have learned so much about construction from these patterns, and I am sooo glad I got out of my comfort zone!

So without further ado....

Here it is!

That pocket was pretty tricky, but it could easily be skipped if your not up for it.  But for me, it makes the dress.

I really think this is the perfect "photo dress".  It's cute, but simple, so you focus on the child instead of the clothes.

I wish i had added a couple inches to the hem, but I think it will be fine with some little tights.

Can't you just see this for a school pic or Christmas card!

You know, looking at the pattern picture, I was not loving the style of the dress...but then seeing it on Sophie, and the red!!! It is so cute! It looks comfy enough to not be fussy, but dressy enough to wear anywhere! And I think the length is perfect. You rock!

I love this, and I've been thinking about getting this one. I'm glad to see your post and Sophie is adorable.
Some little leggings would make all of the difference, and I also think if you make some dresses too long, it takes away from the style.

Thanks.
